Missoula got a blast of cooler weather this week, with a serious dose of wind to go with it. The cool down has me thinking about the fall already, dreaming about those days when the October caddis begin turning trout heads in earnest. I’ve been turning rocks in the Blackfoot all season, and there are some runs that are littered with the bigger cases of these big boy caddis, and they look healthy and happy to wait until the cool down to emerge. While the fishing is good through this recent Hoot Owl era, we need a cool down and some fall fishing to get the motor going again full blast. We’ll get there. For now, if the wind goes away and the cool weather stays, I’m good with that. Rowing in the wind is only slightly more fun than casting in the wind.
